AR interface achievements

March 4, 2024 | Blogs

After the final demonstration, the augmented reality (AR) interface for WP11 developed by Luciad (Hexagon) is now complete. Finalization steps included polishing the UI and integration with the platform. In addition to the requirements established at the beginning of the project, we incorporated some requirements collected directly from end users.

  • Complete integration with platform
  • Harden application to support periods of connection loss and recovery from tracking loss
  • Fulfill all remaining requirements

Additional features added include:

  • Integration with VSAS to get a “return to safety” path
  • Compass with both visual and numeric headings
  • 3D icons to represent dangerous areas (greatly improved perception of size and distance)
  • Style fixes based on user feedback (size of text and map, positioning of elements, etc.)
  • Alternative interaction mode that requires only one hand to move though menus
  • Adapted application to support an additional device (Magic Leap 2)

The application was successfully tested in the field. Despite challenging conditions and hardware limitations, the application managed to run through all the demonstrations, and all the required features were verified.

Initial feedback from the end users (all values on a 0 to 5 scale):

  • Scores of 4,5 and 4,17 over 5 respectively for: “I think that I would like to use this system frequently” and “I felt very confident using the system”
  • Mixed response regarding the amount of training required to use the system, averaging between 2.1 and 2.6 on the related questions

This is aligned with the expectations we had for the application, so we can conclude that end users were satisfied with the results, although some would have liked to have more time to get used to the system. Another more comprehensive publication will be released once a thorough investigation of the collected data is concluded.
